Welcome back! The children have settled back well and have been enthusiastic in learning about Chinese New Year. We made lanterns and  practised counting up to 5 in Mandarin. Oscar taught us how to say hello and goodbye and Bella shared a Chinese lantern and a paper dragon she had bought in London.

" Chinese New Year is important. I went to my friend's house and played. My friend's daddy gave me some money in a red envelope".

"It is the Year of the Dog" Nathaniel

" Dragons are lucky. Red is a lucky colour. They put lanterns up in their homes. " Ronnie

" The emperor had a race and the rat won".Grace

In maths we have been learning to match different coins and talk about what is the same and what is different.

Next week is Book week. We shall be reading the story of The Magic paintbrush by Julia Donaldson. We will be reading different books she has written. On Friday please can we bring a cushion and a book into school for a whole school read in the hall in the afternoon.

Sharing Assembly

We really enjoyed sharing our assembly with you, and hope you enjoyed it too. The children spoke really well and were very proud of their learning.
This week as well as practising our assembly we have been thinking about money, matching coins and talking about what's the same and what is different. We played a game called Odd One Out using 2p 5p and 10p.

" The 2p coin is the odd one out because its the largest coin but the smallest amount" Grace
"  The 10p is the odd one out because it is the biggest". Max P
" The 5p is the odd one out because it is an odd number". Oliver

When we come back from the holidays we shall be learning about Chinese New Year. The home learning is to find out a fact to share.

We hope you have an enjoyable , fun and safe holiday.

Rainbow colours

In maths this week we have been adding 2 numbers together. We have been using different maths resources to help us. We used the bead strings, numicon, objects and numberlines. We then found our own way of recording.
We said aloud the number sentence 4 add 3 equals 7.
On Friday it is NSPCC Number day and we shall be wearing a number. We have lots od different  maths activities planned  and shall be using real money to pay for our snack.

In PE we have been using the  gym equipment to travel in different ways. We have been practising jumping off the equipment by bending our knees.

In Science we have been learning the colours of the rainbow and how they are formed. We pretended to be scientists and did our own colour mixing experiment with skittles. We predicted what we thought might happen.

" I think they will be waterproof because things that are hard are usually waterproof". George

"I think the skittles might change shape" Leo

"  The colours might go into the middle and make a rainbow". Toby

The Home Learning this week is to take part in the RSPB Bird Watch and record what type of and how many birds you see in one hour.

Our Learning Owl this week is Oscar who has been challenging himself with his learning. Well done . Have fun with Otto.

Blue is the Colour

We have really enjoyed Art Week and have used different techniques to explore the colour blue. We listened to the story of the Willow Pattern and created our own designs using tints and shades of blue.
" A tint is a lighter colour, we add white" Joy

In Literacy we learned a poem about colour mixing. We tried to use rhythm when reading the poem aloud.

In Maths we have been sorting different objects. We sorted into size, colour, shape. We used smarties to collect information. Mrs Bentley thought that blue was the most popular colour in the smartie  tube. We sorted the smarties counted them and recorded what we had found out. We also made a pictogram to show which was our favourite colour in the class. Our home learning is to collect information about favourite sport, food etc and to record in our own way.
Our Learning Owl is Charlie who has been persevering with his writing . Well done have fun with Otto.

Outdoor Maths

This week we have been exploring our new Maths Shed outdoors. We have been counting , looking for patterns and  using maths talk to talk about numbers less then.. more than.. it has been great fun. We have sharing what we know about numbers and what we need to do to take our learning forwards..
" My next step is to count in 2's" Leo
" My next step is to say the number that is 1 less" Mary Jane.
We have been retelling the story of the Gingerbread Man. We are thinking carefully about using capital letters, finger spaces and making sure it makes sense. We need to use a full stop too at the end of our sentence.

We used the mirrors to look carefully at our features to draw a self portrait. We looked carefully at the shape and position of our eyes nose and mouth. We compared the self portrait we drew this time to those at the beginning of reception. Wow what a difference!
Next week we shall be focusing on an  a colour and we are thinking about the colour blue. The home learning is to bring into school anything blue for a display. We shall also be learning about Willow patterns and in maths we shall be collecting data to draw pictograms and tally charts.
Our Learning  Owl is Ben who has been persevering with his writing. Well done ! Have fun with Otto.
